About Dashashwamedh Ghat

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most famous and vibrant ghat along the crescent-shaped western bank of the sacred Ganges in Varanasi. Believed to have been created by Lord Brahma to welcome Lord Shiva, it is world-renowned for the daily evening Ganga Aarti ceremony where brass lamps, incense, and conch shells create an unforgettable spiritual spectacle.

Spiritual & Historical Significance

According to Hindu mythology, Brahma performed the Dasa-Ashwamedha (ten-horse sacrifice) ritual here. It remains the spiritual and cultural epicenter of old Varanasi.

Ganga Aarti

Seven trained priests perform the choreographed fire ritual facing the holy river. Viewing from the ghat steps is free; rowing boats can be rented for ₹150–300 per seat to watch from the water.

Boat Ride & River Access

The primary hub for boat rides across all 84 ghats. Standard rates range from ₹100–300 for shared boats and ₹1,500–2,500 for private hand-rowed sunrise boats.

Insider Travel Tips

  • Arrive at least 45 minutes before Ganga Aarti to secure a good viewing spot on the stone steps.
  • Hire a traditional wooden rowing boat rather than a noisy motorboat for an authentic dawn experience.
  • Explore the bustling Vishwanath Gali just behind the ghat for silk, brass artifacts, and breakfast kachori.
  • Beware of persistent touts offering inflated boat prices; negotiate firmly or book via established boat stands.
